Today, the world promotes a hostile attitude towards all gospel principles including and especially marriage. If Satan can split or prevent marriages, he can break apart families and cause much pain, suffering, and instability in the world. This hostility and opposition to marriage was foretold in the scriptures and in many ways, has been present from the beginning.
Scriptures Tell of the Hostile Attitudes
A particular scripture has strong implications for latter day hostilities. In a conversation with his disciples, Jesus states: “If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.” --John 15:18-19
Furthermore, in Lehi and Nephi’s vision of the tree of life, he describes the mocking attitudes people would have in the latter days towards members of the church. He says: “And I also cast my eyes round about, and beheld, on the other side of the river of water, a great and spacious building; and it stood as it were in the air, high above the earth. And it was filled with people, both old and young, both male and female; and their manner of dress was exceedingly fine; and they were in the attitude of mocking and pointing their fingers towards those who had come at and were partaking of the fruit. And after they had tasted of the fruit they were ashamed, because of those that were scoffing at them; and they fell away into forbidden paths and were lost. And great was the multitude that did enter into that strange building. And after they did enter into that building they did point the finger of scorn at me and those that were partaking of the fruit also; but we heeded them not. These are the words of my father: For as many as heeded them, had fallen away.
--I Nephi 8: 26-28, 33-34
One way you can battle the common anti-marriage attitudes of the world is to always remember that legal and lawful marriage between a man and woman is ordained of God and is the essential foundation of the family and society. In the 1995 The Family: A Proclamation to the World, it states in part:
“We, the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children…The first commandment that God gave to Adam and Eve pertained to their potential for parenthood as husband and wife. We declare that God’s commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force. We further declare that God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife…The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ…We warn that individuals who violate covenants of chastity, who abuse spouse or offspring, or who fail to fulfill family responsibilities will one day stand accountable before God. Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets.”
Supporting Marriage Today
Do not be swayed by the anti-marriage attitudes of today. Sexual promiscuity, living together, and all other forms of sexually acting out apart from marriage will lead to great unhappiness in this life, as well as eventual judgement in the next life. Marriage is ordained by God and is the best path to happiness in this life. Search for it. Find it. Support it. And you will enjoy all of the blessing of happiness marriage has to offer in this life and the next. The timing of when it will happen for anyone varies from person to person. Nevertheless, as you search for it and work to be worthy of an eventual temple marriage, you are doing your part to support marriage as a principle and as a lifestyle. Be pro-marriage. Marriage is the cornerstone of society in this life and the next. Because "…neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord" (1 Corinthians 11:11).
