April 2023 Conference—Thoughts for Singles

April 2023 Conference—Thoughts for Singles Every general conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, I pull some different quotes that I feel could have some special significance or interest to singles. These conference thoughts represent the most current modern revelation given to the entire church on a bi-annual basis. Every conference includes some material that everyone and especially singles can use to find extra comfort, hope, direction, and inspiration. I will review a few of those thoughts now. Before I do so, keep in mind this quote from President Ezra Taft Benson on modern revelation being most important revelation:

“The living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet. …
“… God’s revelations to Adam did not instruct Noah how to build the Ark. Noah needed his own revelation. Therefore, the most important prophet, so far as you and I are concerned, is the one living in our day and age to whom the Lord is currently revealing His will for us. Therefore, the most important reading we can do is any of the words of the prophet … contained each month in our Church magazines. Our marching orders for each six months are found in the general conference addresses, which are printed in the Ensign magazine. … Beware of those who would pit the dead prophets against the living prophets, for the living prophets always take precedence.”
--President Ezra Taft Benson
“Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet”, Brigham
Young University devotional, Feb. 26, 1980

Thoughts from the April, 2023 General Conference:

*In spite of the special frustrations and discouragements common to single members, it is important to never allow discouragement to overwhelm us or lead us to give up:

Elder George A. Smith, an Apostle, received counsel from the Prophet Joseph Smith at a time of great difficulty: “He told me I should never get discouraged, whatever difficulties might surround me. If I was sunk in the lowest pit of Nova Scotia and all the Rocky Mountains piled on top of me, I ought not to be discouraged but hang on, exercise faith, and keep up good courage and I should come out on the top of the heap at last.”

How could the Prophet Joseph say that—to someone who was suffering? Because he knew it was true. He lived it. Joseph repeatedly experienced severe difficulties in his life. However, as he exercised faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement and just kept going, he overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
--Elder Carl B. Cook, Just Keep Going—with Faith

*Making and keeping your temple covenants (and regular temple attendance) will give us strength over the challenges of life:

By making and keeping temple covenants, we learn more about the Lord’s purposes and receive a fulness of the Holy Ghost. We receive direction for our lives. We mature in our discipleship so that we do not remain perpetual, unknowing children. Rather, we live with an eternal perspective and are more motivated to serve God and others. We receive increased capacity to fulfill our purposes in mortality. We are protected from evil, and we gain greater power to resist temptation and to repent when we stumble. When we falter, the memory of our covenants with God helps us return to the path. By connecting to God’s power, we become our own pororoca, able to go against the flow of the world, throughout our lives and into the eternities. Ultimately, our destinies are changed because the covenant path leads to exaltation and eternal life.
--Elder Dale G. Renlund, Accessing God’s Power through Covenants

*Despite being single and having other potential differences from other members, we need to be unified and supportive together, all contributing the different things we have to offer:

We are different members of the body of Christ, fulfilling different functions at different times—the ear, the eye, the head, the hand, the feet—yet all of one body. Therefore, our goal is “that there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.” Unity does not require sameness, but it does require harmony. We can have our hearts knit together in love, be one in faith and doctrine, and still cheer for different teams, disagree on various political issues, debate about goals and the right way to achieve them, and many other such things. But we can never disagree or contend with anger or contempt for one another.
--Elder D. Todd Christofferson, One in Christ

*Be a peacemaker with all of your relationships, including with friends and dating relationships:
Anger never persuades. Hostility builds no one. Contention never leads to inspired solutions. Regrettably, we sometimes see contentious behavior even within our own ranks. We hear of those who belittle their spouses and children, of those who use angry outbursts to control others, and of those who punish family members with the “silent treatment.” We hear of youth and children who bully and of employees who defame their colleagues.

My dear brothers and sisters, this should not be. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are to be examples of how to interact with others—especially when we have differences of opinion. One of the easiest ways to identify a true follower of Jesus Christ is how compassionately that person treats other people.
--President Russell M. Nelson, Peacemakers Needed

Final Thoughts:
There are other good talks and quotes from the most recent general conference. However, I felt these few quotes were interesting, applicable, helpful, and useful to singles especially. In encourage you to read, watch, or listen to all of the talks from this conference and find applicability with these talks to your life. As you do you will be a healthier, happier person and you will prepare yourself better for eventual marriage and other relationships, remembering that “…neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.”—1 Corinthians 11:1.
